Our Approach

The Standards for Excellence Institute® is a national initiative established to promote the highest standards of ethics, effectiveness, and accountability in nonprofit governance, management, and operations, and to help all nonprofit organizations meet these high benchmarks.

The Standards offer an A-Z resource on best practices for nonprofit organizational governance, management, policies and procedures, and legal compliance at any stage of a nonprofit’s lifecycle.  The centerpiece of the Institute’s program is the Standards for Excellence®: An Ethics and Accountability Code for the Nonprofit Sector.  The Code builds upon the legal foundations of nonprofit management, governance, and operations to embrace fundamental values such as honesty, integrity, fairness, respect, trust, compassion, responsibility, and transparency.  The Code consists of 6 Guiding Principles in 27 topic areas with specific performance benchmarks and measures that provide a structured approach to building capacity, accountability, and sustainability in your organization.

What makes this approach unique is that we don’t just talk about accountability.  We provide nonprofits with a common-sense approach to achieve the highest standards in governance and management, while at the same time staying focused on the people and communities they serve.

What We Can Help You With

Whether you are interested in all 27 topic areas of the Code or just 1, or interested in something else, we can help assess your needs, develop a plan, and implement solutions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Nonprofit Coaching?

Nonprofit coaching provides board members and paid and volunteer leaders and managers with one-on-one guidance on a specific topic.  Coaches anticipate and tackle specific nonprofit challenges.  They’re prescriptive and proactive by nature, actively participating in strategizing and co-creating successful outcomes with their clients.  Coaches focus on helping their clients reach a set goal and drive the agenda for the relationship.  Coaching is typically short-term and formal.

What is Nonprofit Mentoring?

Often confused with coaching, mentoring is a different relationship with the client.  In coaching, the coach is in the driver’s seat.  In mentoring, the mentee is in the driver seat.  The mentee sets the goals of the relationship and what they want to work on.  Mentors then share their wisdom and provide insight and guidance.  A mentor/mentee connection is typically open-ended and informal.

What is Nonprofit Consulting?

Nonprofit consulting typically involves project work with defined objectives and deliverables.  Consultants bring their technical expertise to bear as they work with leadership on strategies, structures, policies, and procedures to improve the effectiveness of the organization.  Consulting can work hand-in-hand with coaching and mentoring.

How does Coaching Compare with Consulting?

Traditional organizational consulting focuses on the whole organization.  Consultants bring their technical expertise to bear as they work on strategies, structures, policies, and procedures.  Coaches, by contrast, apply expertise in personal development and organizational behavior to provide support for leaders.  The coach’s goal is to help leaders make more conscious decisions and pursue actions that benefit the organizations they lead.

How do I know which I need: Consulting, Coaching, or Mentoring?

That’s a good question!  The best way to figure this out is for you to schedule some time with me so we can discuss your situation.  Once I understand your situation better, I can help you decide which you need.  You could need just one or a blend of the three.  Click the green button below right to schedule time with me.  There is no cost or obligation.

In today’s world, nonprofits cannot simply be ‘do-gooders.’  Nonprofits must act ethically and be held accountable for achieving results.  The Standards for Excellence® offer nonprofit board and staff leaders the tools they need to strengthen the quality and integrity of management in their organizations.
